How to connect ChatGPT Business or Enterprise to Rent Manager

On a ChatGPT Business or Enterprise workspace, you won’t find the place to add a custom connector in your own settings. It’s an admin switch. Here is what the workspace owner or admin turns on, once, so your team can ask ChatGPT about live Rent Manager data.

The short version

On a personal ChatGPT account you add a custom connector yourself. On a workspace plan (Business or Enterprise), the workspace Owner or Admin controls custom connectors. If you are looking in your personal Settings for Developer mode and it isn’t there, that’s why. Nothing is broken.

There is no plugin to install

If you went looking for an “AskRentAI plugin,” you won’t find one. OpenAI retired the plugin store. A custom MCP connector is the modern equivalent, and AskRentAI’s server URL is all ChatGPT needs:

What you need first

An AskRentAI account connected to Rent Manager. Sign up with your Rent Manager URL, API username, and password. The connection is tested before you leave the page. Seven-day trial, no card.
Rent Manager with API access enabled on the user you connect with. Your Rent Manager administrator or LCS support can confirm this. A dedicated read-only API user is the better habit; see the setup guide.
Owner or Admin rights on the ChatGPT workspace, or someone who has them. If you own the company’s ChatGPT account, that’s probably you.

Step 1 · Enable custom MCP connectors (admin)

This happens in the workspace admin panel, not your personal settings. The exact labels shift occasionally; this is the path as of mid-2026.

Open Workspace Settings (the admin panel).
Go to Permissions & Roles → Connected Data.
Enable Create custom MCP connectors (Developer mode) for the workspace.

Step 2 · Create and publish the AskRentAI connector (admin)

Create a new custom connector.
- Name: AskRentAI
- Server URL: https://api.askrentai.com/mcp
- Authentication: OAuth
ChatGPT runs a Scan tools step and lists the AskRentAI tools it found.
Test it as a draft first. Sign in with your AskRentAI email when prompted, approve the connection, and ask “Use the AskRentAI tools to list my properties.”
When it answers from your Rent Manager data, publish the connector to the workspace.

Read-only by design. AskRentAI never writes to Rent Manager. It cannot post a charge, edit a lease, or change a tenant record. Publishing it to the workspace gives people a way to ask questions, not to change data.

Step 3 · Members sign in and ask

Once the connector is published, members see AskRentAI in the tools / + menu in a chat. The first time, each person signs in with their own AskRentAI email through the one-tap link AskRentAI emails them, then approves the connection.

If OAuth sign-in is flaky, switch the connector to API-key / Bearer auth and paste the rmk_ token from your AskRentAI signup email. That path doesn’t depend on email sign-in.

What to ask first

Start with something you already know the answer to. Then ask something you don’t.

“What’s my occupancy across the whole portfolio right now?”

A live count, property by property.

“Show me delinquency over 30 days, worst properties first.”

Aged receivables, ranked, without opening a report.

“Compare NOI this year against last year and tell me what changed.”

If your admin won’t enable it

Common questions

I can’t find Developer mode in my ChatGPT settings.

On a Business or Enterprise workspace it isn’t in personal settings. The workspace Owner or Admin controls custom connectors from the admin panel (Step 1 above).

Does this change anything in Rent Manager?

No. AskRentAI is read-only and has no ability to write, edit, or delete anything in Rent Manager.

Is our Rent Manager data used to train AI models?

AskRentAI doesn’t train on your data. Once a question reaches ChatGPT, OpenAI’s policy governs the conversation; on ChatGPT’s business and enterprise plans, that means no training on your content. The privacy page covers what AskRentAI itself stores.

Is this an official Rent Manager or OpenAI product?
