Using the Rent Manager API without a developer

You have API access. You don't have anyone to build against it. Here's how to get answers out of the Rent Manager API in plain English — no code, no integration project, no six-week timeline.

The problem with having API access

Rent Manager ships a capable web API. Turning it on is the easy part. What happens next is the problem.

To actually get something out of it, somebody has to know which endpoint holds the data, how the tables relate, how to authenticate, how to page through results, and how to turn what comes back into an answer a human can act on. That's a developer. Developers cost more per week than most operators want to spend on a reporting question.

So API access sits switched on and unused, and everyone goes back to exporting reports by hand.

Three ways people usually try to solve this

ApproachWhat it costsWhere it breaks
Hire a developer Weeks of time, thousands of dollars Every new question is a new ticket. The thing you built answers the questions you had last quarter.
Build it yourself with a no-code or vibe-coding tool Your evenings Authentication and pagination stop most attempts. The ones that survive become software you now maintain.
Export reports and paste them into AI 15–30 minutes per question Works, but the data is stale the moment you export it, and you can only ask about what you happened to export.

The third one is closest to right. People do it because the instinct is correct: an AI is genuinely good at answering questions about property data. The only broken part is how the data gets there.

The fourth way: let the AI call the API

Instead of you fetching data and handing it to an AI, the AI fetches it directly, at the moment you ask.

AskRentAI sits between your AI and Rent Manager. It holds your API credentials, knows the shape of Rent Manager's data, and exposes it as something an AI can actually use. You type a question in Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, or Grok. The AI figures out what data it needs, pulls it live, and answers.

No code written. No integration maintained. And when you have a new question next month, you just ask it — there's nothing to rebuild.

Read-only, by design. AskRentAI reads from Rent Manager and never writes. It cannot post a charge, edit a lease, or modify a tenant record. Point a read-only API user at it and the blast radius is zero.

What that looks like in practice

Instead of specifying an endpoint, a date filter, and a join, you type:

"Pull every lease expiring in the next 90 days across all properties,
with current rent and how long the tenant has been there."

Behind that one sentence, several Rent Manager queries run, results get combined, and you get a table. The work a developer would have done is done by the AI, in the moment, against live data.

And because nothing was hardcoded, the follow-up costs nothing:

"Now show me only the ones paying under market, sorted by how far under."

If you do have a developer

Then you have options, and it's worth being straight about the tradeoff.

Building directly against the Rent Manager API gives you full control and a system tuned to exactly your workflow. If you need scheduled jobs, writes back into Rent Manager, or a customer-facing product, build it. AskRentAI doesn't replace that.

What AskRentAI replaces is the long tail — the hundred one-off questions a year that each individually don't justify a ticket but collectively eat every Sunday afternoon. Those are the ones worth handing to an AI.

AskRentAI is also a standard MCP server, so your own agents and scripts can call it directly rather than reimplementing Rent Manager's API surface. Details in the setup guide.

Getting started

  1. Create a Rent Manager API user. Read-only is enough. Note the username, password, and your Rent Manager URL.
  2. Sign up for AskRentAI at askrentai.com/signup and paste those credentials in. The connection is verified on the spot.
  3. Connect your AI — Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, or Grok. The setup guide walks through each one.

About ten minutes, most of it copying and pasting. Seven-day trial, no card.

Common questions

Do I need to know anything technical?

You need to be able to create a user in Rent Manager and paste three values into a form. That's the whole technical requirement.

What if my API access isn't turned on yet?

Ask your Rent Manager administrator, or contact LCS support. It's a standard part of Rent Manager, not an add-on you have to negotiate for.

Can it write back to Rent Manager?

No, and that's deliberate. Read-only means an AI misunderstanding your question produces a wrong answer, not a wrong ledger entry.

What does it cost?

$10 per user per month. Seven-day free trial, no card required. Cancel anytime — no contract.
